Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
